Out This Week…
On Streaming:
For all the You fans out there, the final season premieres on Netflix on Thursday. I’ve never watched it but those who love it seem to really love it so I hope y’all enjoy!
Also on Netflix, the long awaited Tom Hardy flick, Havoc, finally comes out this week. Hardy plays a cop who gets mixed up in the city’s criminal underworld to save a politician’s son. It doesn’t sound like a particularly new story but its directed by Gareth Evans, a fantastic action director so we’ll see.
On Prime this week, new sci fi horror film Ash drops. Starring Eiza Gonzalez, this film sees her waking up on a planet with all her crew dead. A mysterious man shows up to offer her help and things get weird from there.
Etoile also premieres on Prime this week. This is the follow up series from the team behind The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and centres on the world of ballet. Moving between Paris and New York, the staff at prestigious ballet institutions swap students to save their schools.
On Max this week, in addition to the next episode of The Last of Us, is the second season the Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal. I’ve yet to see the first season but its been on my list the whole time. Always a reminder of how time flies when something that has been on your list since the first season comes out with a new season.
My most highly anticipated release this week is Andor Season 2 dropping on Disney+ this Wednesday here in Aus. In my opinion, easily the best thing that has come out of Star Wars maybe since Disney’s takeover. I’m very excited to see where the second season takes us.
At the Cinema:
Until Dawn (dir. David F. Sandberg)
Based on the video game, this horror sees a group of friends go to a remote valley in search of their missing friend. They find themselves stalked by a killer, and murdered one by one, until they wake up back at the beginning of the previous day. Mixing slasher horror and time loops, this one looks interesting, if almost nothing like the original game.
The Accountant 2 (dir. Gavin O’Connor)
I did not see this sequel coming but here we are. Admittedly I have not seen the first film but it didn’t seem to leave any distinct impact on the culture. In this film, Ben Affleck’s Christian Wolff is drawn into a mystery when an old acquaintance is murdered leaving a cryptic message behind. He recruits his brother, played by Jon Bernthal (righto) to help him unravel a conspiracy. We give everything a chance but I dunno about this one.
Crossing (dir. Levan Akin)
Swedish film, Crossing (also called Passage, depending on region) is out this week, though likely in only select cinemas. This is about Lia, a teacher who travels to Istanbul to find her niece, a young trans woman. On the way, she meets a young lawyer fighting for trans rights. With a very solid 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for this one.
New Books:
Great Big Beautiful Life - Emily Henry
A new book from the current queen of romance is sure to be a big seller. The set up of this one feels slightly reminiscent of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, in that the romantic hopefuls are two rival journalists called to the home of the famous heiress and recluse Margaret Ives. They will have to stay there for a month but only one of them will end up with the rights to tell her story. Its giving rivals to lovers and if anyone can pull off such a weird set up, its probably Emily Henry.
Mythica: A New History of Homer’s World, Through the Women Written Out of It - Emily Hauser
This is a new non fiction from award winning Classicist Emily Hauser. She uses latest DNA and archaeological discoveries to explore the lives of the real women of behind Ancient Greek myth. As a Greek myth girlie, I’m very keen to have a look at this one.
That’s all for this week! Let me know what you’re checking out!
